Fans May Get More Westeros After GOT Wraps

Fans may get more Westeros after GOT wraps

Fresh off a massive season finale, HBO’s Game of Thrones is poised for the seventh season of the hit adaptation of the gritty George RR Martin novels. Fans of both the show and the books are on the edge of their seats, excited to finally see what happens when Dany’s dragons come to Westeros and what might happen when all the show’s leads finally meet.

What secrets will be revealed when the new king in the north, Jon Snow, is united with the queen most people seem to believe is his aunt by blood? Is that the origin of Martin’s “Ice and Fire” title for his books series? And, will Dany bring her dragons to bear on the white walkers, finishing the real battle her forebears failed to even attempt after they took the Seven Kingdoms?

Producers promise to begin to answer all of these questions and even more this summer when the seventh season begins. And they swear to wrap it all up with a great big bow at the end of the eighth and final season, but now Game of Thrones fans have even more to look forward to when the series wraps.

Rumors surfaced recently that at least one, but perhaps more, spin-offs are in the works. Now HBO has officially confirmed the rumors are true. Four writers are working on treatments for scripts to cover several different time periods in the history of Westeros.

While nothing has been confirmed as of yet, many fans are hoping Martin and HBO make a live action version of his Dunk and Egg stories, collectively called Hedge Knight stories about a roaming knight and his squire, who just happens to be the errant heir to the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, here’s what the network told CNN about the project:

“There is no set timetable for these projects… We'll take as much or as little time as the writers need and, as with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in.”

That’s certainly cryptic, and it could mean there are no shows at all or possibly several new stories about Westeros. Certainly, the latter seems to be the most viable option for HBO, which has a massive hit on their hands and definitely won’t want to squander all that well-cultivated fan love.

Of course, the flip side of that idea is treading the line between giving fans more of what they want and not giving them too much of what they love. It’s tough, sometimes, for TV to capture lightning more than once, though it can happen. Sometimes, the spin-offs even surpass the shows that spawned them. Will that happen in Westeros?
